Food Pantry Implements New Procedures Due to COVID-19

The Mexico Food Pantry has begun using a new system for distributing food to those in need as a result of the COVID-19 virus. The new system is designed to keep both our volunteers and clients safe and healthy.

Clients need to stop by the food pantry (5863 Scenic Ave., Mexico) before the day they wish to pick up food. Menu and intake forms are available outside the front door of the pantry. Each client needs to take a menu, fill it out completely, and return it to the tub outside the front door. Intake forms only need to be filled out if you are new to the food pantry.

Volunteers will come in ahead of time to fill the orders we have received. They will be placed on pallets outside. During pantry hours, the names of ready orders will be called. Clients can then immediately drive up, load their food into their vehicle and leave.

Remember all 0 point menu items are free. Thank you for your patience as we fine tune our system to ensure we can continue serving those in need safely.

Mexico Food Pantry to Give USDA Food Boxes to Families in Need

The Mexico Food Pantry will begin handing out food boxes to anyone in need as part of the USDA's Farmers to Families Food Box Program.

On Wednesday May 27, 2020, food pantry volunteers will distribute three food boxes each to the first 200 vehicles. The distribution will take place from 4-7 p.m. at the pantry (5863 Scenic Ave., Mexico). The food boxes will be provided in lieu of the bagged food items the pantry usually hands out. Each vehicle will receive a Fresh Fruit/Fresh Vegetable Box, a Dairy Products Box, and a Precooked Meat Box.

The food boxes are being distributed as part of the Coronavirus Farm Assistance Program. The goal of the federally funded program is to keep workers in the food industry employed and provide people in need with access to food. The program will purchase $461 million in fresh fruits and vegetables, $317 million in a variety of dairy products, $258 million in meat products and $175 million in a combination box of fresh produce, dairy or meat products. Suppliers will package these products into family-sized boxes, then transport them to food banks, community and faith-based organizations, and other non-profits.

This support is greatly needed. At the Mexico Food Pantry, the need has soared in the past few months.

The food boxes will be provided in lieu of the bagged food items the pantry usually hands out. Each vehicle will receive a Fresh Fruit/Fresh Vegetable Box, a Dairy Products Box, and a Precooked Meat Box.

Lycoming Methodist Church youth raise $500 for food pantry

The Lycoming United Methodist Church's youth group donated $500 to the Mexico Food Pantry on Sunday. The youth raised the money through several fundraising efforts. They presented the food pantry with the donation at Sunday services. Thank you for all your hard work and support!

Clients must verify their address with food pantry starting in July

Beginning July 1 all clients who receive services from the Mexico Food Pantry must verify their address.

Our pantry only serves people in need in the Mexico School District and we must re-verify each year that our clients reside within the school district. Other food pantries and assistance programs are available for people who live outside the school district.

Residency can be verified by bringing a document with your address on your next visit to the food pantry. Examples of acceptable documents that can used to prove residency are school records or current mail.

Even if a client has verified their address with us in the past, anyone receiving services from the food pantry must verify that they currently live within the Mexico School District.
